Transforming a Beauty: A Ceramic Coating Journey

Hello everyone, Mark here, the proud owner of Visual Pro Detailing! I recently had the pleasure of working on a truly stunning vehicle that made my day—and I couldn’t wait to share the experience with you all.

This beauty was a fun one! From the moment I laid eyes on it, I knew we were in for a treat. As you might know, ceramic coatings are my specialty, and this truck was no exception.

The Detailing Process

We kicked off the project with an in-depth and meticulous detailing session. This step is crucial, as it lays the foundation for the ceramic coating application. I carefully cleaned every nook and cranny, ensuring that dirt, grime, and previous waxes were completely removed. The goal here is to provide a pristine surface that not only looks great but also maximizes the bonding capabilities of the ceramic coating.

Next, we moved on to a full step of paint polishing. The truck had a gorgeous flat black finish that deserved to shine like the day it rolled off the lot. I utilized a multi-stage polishing process to renew and restore the paint, removing any imperfections, swirls, or scratches that had accumulated over time. The transformation was remarkable; the flat black paint began to glisten, showcasing its true depth and richness.

But Mark, my car is brand new... do I really need all of that?

It's simply a part of doing this right the first time . My customers are shocked how much machine polishing amps up and the shine on even a brand new vehicle. Not to mention just because a car is brand new, doesn't mean it has not accumulated a few swirl marks or water spots here and there.

After we prepare the car with machine polishing, we do what is called my Pure Bond System. This is one of the most important steps in the entire process, because it removes any dust, polishing oils, car wash film, anything form the surface and gives a "surgically clean surface" for the ceramic coating to bond to.

This is really key. The reason a lot of ceramic coatings do not perform like they are supposed to is because the surface was not prepared correctly prior to the application.

I don't skimp on this part... ever.

Then I applied my Pro Coatings to the paint, trim, wheels, and glass. These aren't Amazon bought coatings, these are professional grade only sediment suspension technology, the newest and most effective coatings in the industry because of new technology that allows a greater concentration of protection on the surface and less of that bottle and liquid that is wiped on the surface to be the solvent that binds all of the good stuff together.

How much does a ceramic coating cost on a truck?

Well, depending on your market, what level of paint polishing the detailer is going to perform before the ceramic coating, the color of your truck, and the type of coating that is being applied it can vary greatly.

If anyone is putting a professional grade ceramic coating on your truck and completely preparing the surface ahead of time for less than $1,000 I would be somewhat suspicious. Get references, do your homework, and look at plenty of online reviews. There is a huge time involvement and product cost for these types of services.

I would safely say to expect to pay between $1500 - $2500 for this type of service on a full size truck. Again, where you live in the country, the experience of the detailer, and the level of coating application will vary this price greatly across the country. There is no one size fits all pricing, but any detailer will likely be happy to give you a quote for your particular truck.

So, anyone who knows anything about me (Mark Barger, owner of Visual Pro) knows I am absolutely obsessed with putting the best protection on my customers cars as I possibly can.

I'm constantly in search of new technology, new formulations, even subtle improvements that can get you a better result when you invest your hard earned money into protecting your vehicle.

The problem has been that for the last 5+ years... nothing new has came out that was actually *better* than what has already existed in the industry.

Well, that has changed.

The last 3-4 months (this article was written June of 2023), I've been one of the few detailers in the world that has been testing a completely new ceramic coating technology that is about to overtake the detailing world.

The coatings are based on what is called Sediment Suspension Technology.

What on earth does that mean?

Well, without completely nerding out on you, it means that the protective elements and chemicals are TREMENDOUSLY more concentrated than any other ceramic coating in existence because there is new technology that holds all of the elements in suspension in a much more efficient way.

So when we wipe this product on the surface, your are getting a much thicker more concentrated layer of ceramic protection than...

Anything. Anywhere. Even the "multi coat" ceramic coatings do not hold a candle to this.

The dealership installed products (that are designed to be simple to apply, not durable)? They do not hold a candle to this.

These products have undergone actual laboratory testing HUNDREDS of times and have in these tests blown away everything in the industry.

The LEAST talked about benefit of a Ceramic Coating

Even detailers who sell ceramic coatings don't talk about this enough. That needs to change.

Let's talk about preservation of your vehicle.

Believe it or not, this is 100% not a ceramic coating pitch.

You see, one of the most destructive forces on vehicles is the sun and the UV rays that rain down on it.

On top of that chemicals(from road salt for instance), sap, iron particles (from brakes for instance), sap, tar, road film.

All of that stuff will slowly but steadily eat into your expensive clear coat on your paint given time.

Ever wonder why headlights fade?

Because UV rays have eaten through the factory clear coat on the headlights, causing them to fade and oxidate.

Ok Mark, so what is your point in all of this?

Some facts for you about this:

When you purchase a brand new vehicle, no matter how much it costs... there is NO protection at all on your paint unless you paid for it.

If you don't have protection put on, it is immediately going to get exposed to the elements I talked about above.

This is why SO many vehicles look SO bad after only 1-2 years of ownership, the belief that because it is new it needs NO protection.

It was waxed so that will last for 1+ year.

This is wrong also.

Most waxes last only a couple of weeks, at most a couple of months.

Even the higher end silica based sealants will only give 4-6 months protection under ideal conditions.

If you are putting a wax on your vehicle that only lasts a month, then letting it go the rest of the time, 11 out of the 12 months of the year your vehicles paint is completely unprotected.

Automatic car washes, while convenient, DESTROY waxes and most sealants very quickly.

Want to know how those car washes, even the coin operated ones with the wands that don't touch the paint get the car clean?

The soaps they use are VERY acidic, they will strip any wax away in a couple of washes easily. It's not their fault, they want you to get a clean car, but the chemicals within those washes are extremely aggressive.

I love selling ceramic coatings, I love providing protection for peoples vehicles and helping to keep them looking their best.

The reason we believe in them so much is not just because of the hydrophobic (water repellent) abilities, the ease of cleaning, the beautiful shine, but because they preserve and protect the vehicles appearance in the long term.

The strange thing is... this is the absolute least discussed benefit of ceramic coatings to the public.

Way too much emphasis is put on the water shedding abilities, not enough on the protection to the owner of the vehicle to keep their vehicle looking great over years of ownership.

If you don't want to purchase a coating, I get it! But I would recommend at the very least using a durable sealant 3-4 times a year, PLUS a spray wax or sealant after every wash or every other wash if you are using automatic car washes at all.

I really enjoy the transformation part of what we do for our customers.

This Ram was covered in winter, and the owner wanted to not only restore it but protect it for years to come.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to perform one of our ceramic coating packages...

First of all, EVERY one of our ceramic packages includes an exterior detail that is not quick, simple, or fast.

We deep clean every surfaces so that the vehicle is ready to be machine polished to a diamond like shine. This is an essential step in the process so that when we apply the protective ceramic coating, it locks in that shine.

Next is the paint correction process, known more widely as buffing but to a level that is not often seen. This is not a "quick buff" where we run around the vehicle in 45 minutes and the paint looks worse in the sun than before the process started. This is a slow, in depth process designed to remove swirl marks, scratches, fading, and restore the new car look.

If your trucks paint doesn't have the shine it used to have, or if it is new to you and doesn't have the shine it should have (dealerships do an awful job of making new vehicles look new), this is the process to make it look amazing again.

After the polishing (this truck took around 8 full hours), the Pure Bond process is performed. This is a step by step deep cleaning process to remove any dust, polishing oils, and anything from the surface that would stop the ceramic from bonding correctly.

Think: squeaky clean.

Now is the ceramic application. We use professional grade ceramic coatings that permanently bond to the surface, creating a barrier between your vehicles paint and the elements. It also locks in the shine of your new or new to you vehicle, eliminates the need to wax for the life of the coating, and makes washing a breeze, because dirt, bugs, and grime are extremely simply to wash off of a ceramic coated vehicle.

After it is coated? You wash it, dry it, and it looks like you spent all weekend detailing it.

Ceramic Coatings Buyers Guide For 2023, How do I pick an installer?

I'm a car owner. How on earth do I go about picking a ceramic coating, or a detailer to install a ceramic coating for me? It's all gotten so confusing.

Ok, let's get into this, and let's make it as simple as possible, but as real as possible also.

Quick just so you know, my name is Mark Barger, Owner of Visual Pro Detailing in Benton, IL. Small rural detail shop, but we do 150+ Ceramic Coatings per year.

One of my passions is helping people make the best decision for THEM when it comes to car care, not just what makes me money.

So I'm going to throw this blog post out there into the universe, and hopefully it will help some people out.

First of all, a ceramic coating is NOT a good investment for you if you match the following criteria:

You don't like to hand wash your car, or regularly wash it. A ceramic coating is NOT a license to not care for a vehicle, it is designed to make your regular care of a vehicle easier. To be perfectly directly with you, you would be better off regularly having the vehicle cleaned and waxed rather than ceramic coated if you are not planning on having a regular hand washing routine.
You plan to use automatic car washes with big brushes and flaps to wash your car regularly. These types of car washes are extremely damaging to the vehicles surfaces and will put scratches and swirl marks in your ceramic coating also with regular use. Again, you would be better off just having the vehicle cleaned and waxed every few months.
You cannot afford it. A Ceramic coating is an investment in protection and preservation of a vehicle. It is also expensive, even if you do it yourself. A quality professional detailer in 2023 is likely going to be charging $600+ for even an entry level ceramic coating application with very little cleaning and polishing before the coating is applied. There are much more budget friendly ways to take care of your car if you have the time, energy, and motivation (most do not have the time however, which is why these services from professionals are so popular).

Ok, that being said, I'm still looking for a ceramic coating installation, how should I go about buying one?

Things to look for when purchasing a ceramic coating installation from a professional. This is not an "all encompassing" list, it is the most common things as a full time professional detailer that I feel consumers should look for when purchasing a ceramic coating.

Do not focus so much on the product. There are a LOT of really good, high quality ceramic coatings in the market now days. There are new ones being released, upgraded, and improved every single year. Detailers are also prone to "chase" coating brands and switch fairly often. Brands that are high quality with proven track records and results are Gtechniq, Gyeon, Opti-Coat, Ceramic Pro, IGL, CarPro, and SPS. There ARE other quality brands out there, but these are the industry standards for a reason.
Do focus on the detailer or shop that is going to be installing the coating. My biggest suggestion before setting up a ceramic coating appointment for your vehicle is to actually go to the shop you are considering having install your coating and talk in person with the installer or shop manager. I know this may seem old school, but a hand shake and eye contact goes a long way. Is their shop clean and organized? Are they friendly and knowledgeable? Do they try to "push" you into the sale, or are they willing to answer your questions and give you recommendations?
Ask about the after care of the coating. What sort of maintenance does your shop or detailer recommend post application? Do they have a care sheet or videos to walk you through taking care of the vehicle after the coating has been applied? How much do they charge for a standard maintenance package, and how often do they recommend having it done?
The price. I know that people who have read this far are eagerly waiting for me to tell them what they price is and should be for a service of this type. This is where I am likely going to have to massively disappoint you. Across the country, the cost of this service varies massively depending on your geographical location, how much competition is in the area, what type of coating they are applying, and how difficult your vehicle is to clean, decontaminate, polish (meaning buff the paint, commonly called paint correction in the industry), prepare, and apply the coatings. I will say that an entry level ceramic coating can start at $600, and a professional grade ceramic coating that includes all exterior surfaces of the vehicle can vary from $1,200 all the way up to $3,000+.
Price is not the most important factor. The detailer, how comfortable you are with them, their track record, attitude, and willingness to give you an amazing service is. Often times a smaller detailer or detail shop that is less well known can give you an even better service because they value building a relationship with you, not just getting a one-off sale.

This is not the be all, end all of how, when, and why to purchase a ceramic coating, but should provide some simple guidelines if you are looking to break through the muck and look for someone to install one for you. They provide incredible shine, ease of cleaning, ease of maintenance, and preserve the appearance of your vehicle and I sincerely hope you find a great detailer to apply one for you in the future!

Can you remove scratches from a Ceramic Coated Vehicle?

What happens if my ceramic coated vehicle gets scratches?

It happens when you own a vehicle, even with a ceramic coating.

What happens if it gets scratches?

The good news is, this is usually a pretty simple process to fix, even with your ceramic coating.

When you have localized scratches, from maybe a cat, or a purse, or from a dealership technician that rubbed against your paint (like the picture above), they can be mostly simply polished off of the surface, then that particular section re-coated.

When it happens over the entire vehicle, for instance when someone washes the vehicle with rough brushes, it gets a little more complicated. At that point, if the scratches really bother you it may be best to have paint correction done to the entire vehicle and the coating re-applied.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

An old saying that helps us understand that preventing scratches is not always possible, but using good wash technique an hand washing except in the case of touch free car washes, ceramic coated vehicles usually get very minimal scratches.

The Pure Bond Ceramic Coating system.. What does that mean?

The simple explanation is that it is a system designed to get the best possible bond to your ceramic coating by doing a multi step cleaning process to make sure that you get the best possible bond, therefor the best and longest lasting results for your ceramic coating.

The long explanation is as follows:

You see, with ceramic coatings, much like many other services, it's all about the preparation before hand.

When you paint a room in your home, you can't just grab a bucket and start slathering paint. You need to clean the wall, possibly sand it, remove old wallpaper, then once the wall is clean and dry, then paint.

When applying a ceramic coating, you cannot simply wash the car then start wiping on a ceramic coating. This is the #1 reason why consumers are disappointed with ceramics applied by dealerships.

At the bare minimum a vehicle should be:

Thoroughly washed
Clay barred to remove invisible contaminants stuck to the paint
Machine polished to remove any wax, sealants, and to make the paint look good
Wiped down with a product specific prep product before ceramic coating is applied

Do Ceramic Coatings Need Waxed?

Do I need to wax a car that has been ceramic coated?

One of the incredible benefits of a ceramic coating is the ease of maintenance.

Ease of maintenance, that sounds like a detailing term, but what does it mean?

It means that you spend less time washing, no time waxing, and less time thinking about cleaning and protecting your vehicle.

Wait, you said... no time waxing?

If you wax a ceramic coated car, to be really frank and straight forward, you are wasting your time.

The ceramic coating has already bonded to your clear coat creating a hardened layer of sio2(glass like) protection that is far more durable, long lasting, and chemical(bug, bird dropping, salt ect.) resistant than any wax.

Not to mention, these coatings are extremely slick and repel contaminants from the surface, so when you try and apply that wax to the coated surface, it is not going to stick like it would to a vehicle with out the ceramic on it, making the application much harder to complete.

Another factor is that the wax, much like the dirt and grime that gets on a ceramic coated car, is not going to bond the same way it would to a regular car without a coating.

Most likely, the first time you go to hand wash the car again all of that wax is going to wash off and your time will be wasted.

So how do you maintain a ceramic coated car? Well, that's a story for another post, and we will get to that.

But to answer the core of the question: NO, you do not need to wax a ceramic coated vehicle. Part of paying the up front price for a ceramic coating (or the investment in time and effort if you are going to attempt to ceramic coat your car yourself) is that it makes taking care of your vehicle LESS time consuming, giving you MORE time to enjoy driving and your life.

How do I maintain a ceramic coated car?

My clients consistently ask me when scheduling for their vehicle to be ceramic coated:

"How do I take care of the car after it is coated? Is there a specific way?"

I would like to answer this question in text and video form. One of the simplest explanations is that ceramic coated vehicles simply need to be regularly washed, and occasionally decontaminated by your detailer.

I recommend that my clients bring in the car that I have applied a ceramic coating to once per year for a thorough decontamination wash, a light clay bar treatment to remove any surface contaminants, and an inspection of the coating itself.

The general guidelines I recommend for a coated car are:

Weekly or bi-weekly wash with a dedicated car wash soap, using two buckets with grit guard inserts.

Rinseless wash method using micro fiber towels and microfiber wash mitts and Optimum No Rinse(preferred method).

If you are not able to hand the wash the vehicle, I do highly recommend you take it to touchless car washes, with no rotating brushes that actually make contact with the vehicle.

This is very important as MOST COATING WARRANTIES can be voided if you go through brush car washes. Contact your detailer and ask him or her if your coating warranty covers brush car washes.

Regardless of warranty status, brush car washes CAN AND WILL eventually put swirl marks and scratches into your vehicles clear coat, despite the existence of a ceramic coating. Again, while many ceramic coatings are scratch resistant, they are not scratch PROOF.

All of this being said, ceramic coated vehicles are extremely easy to clean and maintain compared to vehicles that are not coated. With a solid washing process, your vehicle will look better than ever after a simple wash.

How much does a ceramic coating cost?

The most commonly asked question that I receive about ceramic nano coatings is: how much do they cost? In this post I will address this question in the clearest, most transparent way at possible.

At Visual Pro Detailing, I try and be as up front and simple in my explanation of pricing as possible. That being said, please know that there will be variance in pricing based on your geographical location. My video explanation does NOT address every possible pricing situation and outcome.

There are many different factors that go into ceramic coating pricing, including, but not limited to:

Size of the vehicle

A Mazda Miata will be much less time consuming than a Cadillac Escalade, this will factor into the final price greatly.

Condition of the vehicle

Will an excessive amount of pre cleaning and preperation be needed? A daily driven SUV with 60,000 miles will likely need much more work to prepare for the coating than a garage kept sports car with 2,000 miles on it. This is one of the biggest factors in how long your coating prep and application will take, and your detailer should inspect the vehicle thorough to tell you how much work will needed to bring the vehicle to an excellent condition before applying the coating.

Color of the vehicle

Darker colored vehicle are significantly harder and more time consuming to work on. While the cost of your coating may not be less with a light colored car, it may be more due to a dark colored car.

Type and brand of coating to be applied

A consumer grade coating will vary greatly compared to a professional grade coating. Have your detailer discuss the different options(if any) of the brand or brands of coatings the apply. It is not uncommon for detailers to sell several different brands and makes of coatings so that they can provide the best possible option to their clients.

Experience of the detailer applying it

This is very important. A detailer that has applied hundreds of coatings to hundreds of different makes, models, and ages of vehicle will likely charge more for his or her services. This is because of the years of experience that he or she brings to the service to provide you with an excellent prep and application of the coating purchased.

Level of paint correction needed before the coating is applied

If you are purchasing a ceramic coating from a true professional detailer, this will likely be the single largest factor in the final price of your coating package. A single stage of paint correction can easily take 5-8 hours, a two stage paint correction can easily take 12-16 hours, and a multi stage paint correction can take 20+ hours. Your detailer should discuss you in depth the expectations from the paint correction work that he or she is going to do to the vehicle prior to the coating application. If desired, even ask for a test spot so that you can see the expected result before scheduling your appointment.

Please watch the video, but the basic variance in pricing is:

Consumer grade coating with a single stage of paint correction - $450+

Professional grade coating with single stage of paint correction - $900+

While these numbers may be vague, please be aware there could be a plus or minus $1,000 variance easily from the different variables I listed above.

This is why it is so important to ask your detailer to give you a detailed cost, and ask what is included before you making a coating purchase. While you may be getting a "good price", you may not be getting a professional grade coating, a professionally applied consumer grade coating, paint correction services, or other services that you may assume are included in the price.

Educate yourself, ask questions, do your research. It will be well worth it in the long run!

Paint correction is a time consuming, meticulous process.

Making paint looks shiny, much less like a mirror, takes many hours and years of practice and experience.

A lot of people have purchased a "quick buff" over the years, only to find out that the process caused more damage than it fixed.

If you are wanting your paint corrected, swirls removed, gloss restored, ect. please consider the following:

1. Most body shops, dealership detailers have no idea how to "finish down" paint to a high gloss, mirror like finish. It is simply not what they do.

2. Anyone offering to "buff" your car, saying it will only take an hour or two is likely cutting corners, and will be cutting up your paint. A bad "buff" from an inexperienced person behind a polisher can cause permanent damage to your paint!

3. There are levels of paint correction that need to be considered. Sometimes, even often times it is best to NOT chase every single swirl, scratch, and defect in the paint. Your clear coat is EXTREMELY thin, and often times making a huge improvement is better for your paint than chasing perfection and compromising your very expensive paint.

4. Find a detailer that is willing to discuss YOUR needs, budget, and desired end results. I don't believe that every vehicle is a one size fits all solution, and everyone has a different idea of what "perfection" means to them.
